Term descriptions for pneumatic actuators2020.09.01

The following is an explanation of the terms used for pneumatic actuators that appear in specifications and catalogs.

Double-acting type

There are two air supply ports for opening and closing, and the pistons are operated by switching the air supply and exhaust to operate the pistons.
The piston is operated in both open and closed directions by the force of the supply air.

Single-acting type (Spring return)

The piston is activated and operated by supplying and discharging air from a single air supply port.
It is also called a spring return type because it operates by the force of a built-in spring when it is exhausted.

Air-less open
The valve closes (position 1) by the supply air pressure, exhausts and opens (position 2) by spring action.

Air-less close
The valve opens (position 2) by the supply air pressure, exhausts and closes (position 1) by spring action.

Meaning of the model name

TAD series
The 3-digit number in the model number of the TAD series double-acting actuator indicates the cylinder diameter.
The TAD-050 is a double-acting type with a cylinder diameter of 50 mm.

TAO / TAC series
The O of TAO for a single-acting actuator indicates that it is open (position 2) on the air supply.
The "C" in TAC indicates closed (position 1) by air supply.
The following three digits indicate the cylinder diameter.
In the case of TAO-080, the cylinder is single-acting, opened by air supply, exhausted by air supply and closed by spring force, with a cylinder diameter of 80 mm.

PND series
The two-digit number in the model number of the double-acting actuator PND series indicates the cylinder diameter.
The letter at the end of the name indicates the number of pistons.
PND-03S has a cylinder diameter of 30 mm with a single piston.
PND-05D has a cylinder of 50mm in diameter with double piston.

PSO / PSC series
The O in PSO for a single-acting actuator indicates that it is open on air supply (position 1) and the C in PSC indicates that it is closed on air supply (position 2).
The following two digits indicate the cylinder diameter. The letter at the end indicates the number of springs.
For PSO-03S, open on air supply and closed by spring force on exhaust, cylinder diameter is 30mm, single piston with one spring.
PSC-05D is an air supply closed, exhaust open by spring force, cylinder diameter 50mm, double piston with two springs.
PSC-05W is an 80mm bore up double piston with 4 springs, closed on air supply, spring-loaded open on exhaust.

PLO / PLC series
The O in linear motion single-acting actuators, PLO, means open by air supply and the C in PLC, means closed by air supply.
The next three digits indicate the rated thrust.
PLO-030 opens by pneumatic supply and closes by spring force through exhaustion, with a rated thrust of 300N.
For PLC-070, air pressure is supplied in the closed position, and exhausted in the open position by spring force, with rated thrust of 700N.

Actuator displacement

Cylinder capacity (ℓ) for one round trip operation.
Air consumption can be calculated from the internal volume of the unit and the number of operations.

Operating pressure

This is the range of supply air pressure that can be used stably. Ensure that you are within this pressure range near the actuator.

Supply port size

Size of the pipe connection thread for the supply air.

Drive system

Output shaft drive system.

Rack and pinion
A piston with an infinitely large diameter cylindrical gear (rack) rotates the output shaft with a small wheel (pinion).
The center of the piston and the center of the output shaft are in the same center.

Scotch yoke
The output shaft is rotated by receiving the input from the crank pin in the piston at an eccentric position from the center of the output shaft.
The center of the piston and the center of the output shaft are eccentric.

Operating temperature

Indicates the ambient temperature range in the vicinity of the actuator where the actuator can be used.
Even within this temperature range, the actuator may not be able to be used due to direct sunlight, radiant heat from peripheral equipment or piping, or heat transmitted from the valve, etc.

Manual operation

This is a manual operation method for use in the absence of an air pressure source for operation.
The TAD and PND series can be operated by turning the upper part of the output shaft with a tool.
The TAO/TAC series can be operated by selecting the manual operation unit option.
(The PSO/PSC/PLO/PLC series cannot be operated manually.)
